is it a good or bad practice?

Is your companies social sites being flooded with fake followers?

Did you hire a marketing agency to take care of your online presence and were impressed to see your social sites increase by hundreds maybe even thousands?

I see this all the time, so many marketing companies try to build up their portfolio with fake accounts or paid followers on their own social sites. What you need to be careful with is if your marketing agency is doing this with their own branding then be sure they will do it with your company’s branding as well.  More is NOT always good. They flood the accounts with fake profiles or purchased profiles to make the numbers look higher but in actuality it can hurt your branding more then help.

They go to sites like  http://www.buycheapfollowersfast.com/twitter/ or

There are hundreds of sites like the ones I mentioned above.

Fake Followers can do you more harm than good.

Fake Followers can do you more harm than good.

Focusing on those numbers, and the perceived popularity, can lead to some questionable practices.

Facebook and Twitter are constantly attempting to delete faulty accounts that are used for this type of manipulation, any attention that is gathered from these methods could be destroyed at any second.  It’s also important to realize the bad press and embarrassment that can result if your organization is discovered purchasing fake social media interactions. So, be careful how you spend your marketing dollars.

Here is an article by Forbes to help you build a following for your brand the right way.     “The right way to build your brand”

In my opinion, a lot of fake followers does not make for good marketing… or does it?   What are your thoughts?  Is it a good or bad practice?

Lou Reed – R.I.P.

Growing up listening to Lou Reed makes this hard. Lou Reed helped to shape Rock music for over 50 years. His legacy in the rock world will live on. Lou originally started with the Velvet Underground in the 60’s. He died on Sunday, October 27th on Long Island, NY.   Liver Disease took his life at the age of 71.

“Not too long after his first recordings, made at 16 with a doo-wop band in Freeport, N.Y., Mr. Reed started singing outside of the song’s melody, as if he were giving a speech with a fluctuating drone in a New York accent. That sound, heard with the Velvet Underground on songs like “Heroin” and “Sweet Jane” and in his post-Velvet songs “Walk on the Wild Side,” “Street Hassle” and others, became one of the most familiar frequencies in rock. He played lead guitar the same way, straining against his limitations.” (NY Times)

You can read more about his life in the NY Times article:  Lou Read NY Times

One of my favorites is Lou’s most popular song   Take a Walk on the Wild Side

The way to be a man in a haunted house

It’s the time of year when visiting haunted houses is the thing to do. Halloween is less than a week away. I may not be a fan of dressing up in costumes so the next best thing is to get scared by visiting a haunted house. Why is it that we still scream and jump when we know exactly what is going to happen?
Check out  this clip of Ellen Degeneres sending her staff member, Andy, to a Walking Dead haunted house at Universal Studios. I had to laugh at how unmanly a man can be when scared.

I hope you enjoy this clip as much as I did.

Went with my GUT on this one!

The more I think about the other night the more I realize how lucky we were. We may have avoided what could have been a potentially dangerous situation…

My husband called and asked me to pick him up at the train station. He missed his regular train that morning and had to go to an alternate train station but ended up taking the regular train home. So I had to pick him up and take him to his car at the alternate train station.

As we (myself, my husband and my daughter) were driving through the  partially lit parking lot of the larger station we see a woman standing about 200′ in front of our car towards the back of the parking lot.  Since she motioned us to stop – we did.  I rolled down my window about 10 inches and there she stood a Spanish speaking woman approximately 26 – 30 years old. She pointed to her blue van with the hood up and said, with broken English, and with some hesitancy, that her battery died and wanted to know if we could give her a jump. I asked if she had a cell phone and she said that died too. Something in my gut didn’t sit well. I immediately said, (before my husband could even speak) we do not have cables but I would look for security to come and help her.

As we pulled away my husband said to me “why did you say that we didn’t have cables?” I answered, because something didn’t seem right with her or the situation and my gut told me to say that. So, before I went for security – I dropped my husband off at his car and we drove back around which was only a few minutes later and not to my surprise she was no longer there!!!!  She must have gotten into her van, you know, the one that would not start and left. I guess she didn’t want to see security.

I am assuming that since there was another car parked right next to her van that the people from that car were probably hiding in her van waiting for some innocent person to help and while setting up the cables they would either car jack them or worse.

I saw that my daughter was visibly upset because we were almost a victim of a crime. But I am happy to say “almost a victim.”

The lesson here was for my daughter, as I told her “always follow your gut.” She said she probably would have gotten out to help because it was a woman and she thought she heard her say something about a little boy in the van. It is sad that my 14 yr old daughter has to learn that it is not always wise to help others by putting yourself in potentially “harms way.” I told her that I was still going to help by looking for security making myself and family one less victim in a world full of victims.

Signing off as one less victim.

Pay It Forward – our little story

About a month or so ago my son, Christian, took his girlfriend to a late movie at a local movie theater.   When he got home he realized his wallet was missing.  After checking all the obvious places, like the car and the walk to the house from the car, he quickly raced back to the movie theater with the hopes of it still being open.  So, I called the theater and they told me they just closed but will wait for my son to get there.  About 1/2 hour later,  he returned home, I could see by his expression that he had no luck.  The wallet was gone!  Along with his license, $80.00, school ID, bank card and a few other miscellaneous things.  We went online and ordered a new license, cancelled the bank card and figured he would get a new school ID when school started again. The money was obviously a goner!

Well, the next day, when I went to bring in the mail, guess what I found….   my son’s wallet.   Not only was everything still inside, money included but there was a note (picture below)

Even though we had already taken the steps to replace everything, we were still thrilled at the idea that someone was honest enough to drive to our home and put it in the mailbox.  Of course, my son was more thrilled that his money was still there.

Kudos to that anonymous person.  And pay-it-forward we will.

Linkedin CHANGES coming to a profile near you….

ImageLINKEDIN just streamlined its look.

Here are some of the changes….

They place more emphasis on the photo –  now making it larger, spotlighting it.

So, be sure to make your pic look more like a professional looking head shot.

Another change is they added a contact button just below the photo and brief overview now making it easier to find your contact information which includes your websites, email, twitter handle, and phone number.

Within the grey area they condensed the information displayed giving more visibility to your “summary”  – key prime real estate. Now you really want to focus on your summary content to try and entice people to click the contact information button and give you a call.   Tell your story….

If you click on the edit button a drop down screen will appear allowing you to ask for recommendation,  change the language that your profile is in, share or export your profile to a pdf.

Seems that Linkedin made most of the changes in the top portion of your profile.

And from what I understand  there are more changes to take place in the near future – so stay on the lookout and if you see any of these changes take place let me know.  You may get them before I do…
